Can’t Get a Moment to Yourself?

1. The question
"HELP. I love my kid, but I feel like I can’t get a moment to myself. If I even try to step away they’ll have a meltdown. I’m exhausted and need some space!”
2. Our answer
Yep… this one hits home.
If you’ve ever locked yourself in the bathroom just to breathe (only to see tiny fingers reaching under the door), know that you’re not alone.
So here’s the deal…
Clinginess isn’t random. Our kids are wired for connection.
Their brains are constantly running an analysis on the BIG question: "Am I safe?”
And guess who they look to for that sense of safety? Yeah… it’s us. CONSTANTLY.
Additionally… most of their day is structured whether they’re at school, daycare, or some other out-of-the-home activity.
But when they get home, that structure tends to disappear, and they aren’t exactly sure how to direct themselves.
And yet again, they turn to US to fill that gap.
So a quick fix to consider…
Instead of trying to "get away," let’s flip the script:
1️⃣ Give them 5 minutes of FULL, undistracted attention. No phone, no multitasking… just you, immersed in THEIR world.
2️⃣ Then, set a timer and tell them to keep playing. Even if it’s just 5 minutes at first.
3️⃣ Gradually stretch that time across future play sessions.
Over time, they’ll start building more confidence in playing alone, freeing up some much-needed time for you to focus on yourself (or the million things on your to-do list).
