Does your kid hit, push, slap or roar?

Apr 11, 2024

“My 3-year-old is having a very difficult time regulating his emotions while in preschool. He’ll push, hit, slap, and roar. He’s refusing to nap which seems to amplify the problems. Please help!”

In this video we dig into the common (yet challenging) area of preschooler behavior.

If you're struggling with your 3-year-old's emotional rollercoaster, just know… you're not alone!

It's totally normal to feel overwhelmed when our little ones are pushing, hitting, or roaring, but our first major takeaway…

Let’s forget the idea that your kid needs “fixing”... and instead… let's focus on how we can adapt their environment to better meet their needs.

We share our own toddler’s journey at preschool where some simple adjustments transformed his experience and also discuss the power of co-regulation (e.g., offering calming activities and support to guide them through their storms).

You’ll learn how to cultivate a nurturing home environment where an effort is made to acknowledge, understand, and express our emotions so your kids will be empowered to navigate their big feelings with confidence.

From our parenting toolkit:

Our 3-year-old son was having a hard time transitioning to a new school, and struggled most during nap time. Not napping caused him to struggle in the afternoons because he was tired and overstimulated. Once we looked at the environment, we found better ways to support his success!

We practiced his nap time routine at home, including using his rest mat, to create consistency between home and school. We also moved his rest mat to a quieter room, and reduced activity demands prior to rest time.

We also considered his sensory needs, like his love for all things hands-on (think playdoh, fidgets, and kinetic sand). We discovered these pre-made sensory bins, which have been a big hit in our home! They engage our kids’ senses, help develop fine motor skills, and spark their imagination.

Check them out here! They have a variety of themed bins to choose from.
