“My daughter wakes up grumpy and gets so upset over the smallest things. What can I do to support her?”

 


 

2. Our actionable tip

 

We know this one all too well!

Our youngest literally wakes up sometimes yelling, “It’s too bright!” He may be part vampire, but we’ll save that conversation for Halloween. 🤣

It’s SO tough when all you want is for your kids to start their day off happy, but then they seem to wake up on the ‘wrong side of the bed.’

However, we’ve found that even the smallest adjustments to the morning routine (along with some consistency) will definitely help. So our tip this week…

✅ Add a morning ‘check-in’ to your morning routine.

We’ll go into their room, climb into bed, and ask them how they’re feeling.

The idea is we bring to the surface their emotional state, or what we like to call, taking their "emotional temperature." 

With WHATEVER they share, we start by acknowledging and validating their feelings. We’ll say something like…

"It's okay to feel grumpy in the morning. I do too sometimes." 

By validating their emotions, we help them feel seen and understood (instead of isolated and dismissed).

To level this up, it’d be ideal to teach them coping strategies OUTSIDE of these tough morning moments. Later on in the day, you could say something like…

"What do you think we can do to help our bodies and brains feel better if we wake up grumpy tomorrow morning?”

This will empower them to think about solutions that you can help them leverage the next time that morning grumpiness settles in.

 


 

3. From our toolkit

 

You can also introduce positive affirmations as a part of your daily morning routine!

Our family loves to leave affirmations on sticky notes around the house, or, we’ll even write them on the bathroom mirror to make it easy for everyone to see and start their day off right.
