How kids ‘borrow our calm'
Jan 23, 2025
Hello, Happy Humans! 👋
We're here with our weekly 3 things...
1️⃣ A question from our community
2️⃣ Our actionable tips
3️⃣ A resource from our toolkit
1. The question
“I’ve heard you use the phrase ‘borrow my calm,’ but can you explain what that looks like in real life?”
2. Our answer
This is such an important question!
Catchphrases like this are so common, but it’s easy to overlook the deeper meaning behind them.
The phrase ‘borrow our calm’ shows how kids really rely on their parents (or caregivers) to help regulate their emotions, especially in moments when they’re feeling overwhelmed or dysregulated.
Our kids' brains are still developing the ability to self-soothe or self-regulate, right?
They look to us, their trusted adults, for cues on how to navigate their big emotions.
So when we’re able to remain calm during our kid’s emotional storm, their nervous system can almost “sync-up” with our steady one, gradually helping them find their own calm.
Essentially, your regulated state becomes the anchor for their stormy emotions.
But, before we can truly reap the full benefits of co-regulation, we have to ensure that we're securely connected to our kids.
How do we do this?
We dive deeper into this concept of connection… and explore practical strategies to make it work in your home in our webinar…
Building Connections through Co-Regulation: The Role of Parent-Child Connection and Emotional Regulation in Early Childhood.
We’ll touch on topics like:
- Take Care of Yourself to Take Care of Them
- Be the Calm in Their Storm
- Connection Before Correction
- Play Your Way to Co-Regulation
