How to get your kids to listen without yelling

Apr 25, 2024

“My 5-year-old doesn't listen to my directions at all. For example, she doesn't get up in the morning or go to bed when told.  I end up shouting and that’s when she listens, but I don't want to resort to yelling.”

If you’re tired of the constant battle of trying to get your kids to listen, this video is for you!

We find ourselves resorting to yelling, but that’s not what we want.

In this video, we remind ourselves that our young children are still in the process of developing a slew of skills, so even though they don’t always follow directions immediately, we need to approach these situations with patience and empathy.

We discuss the importance of first connecting with your child, spending a few minutes in their world before expecting them to engage in yours. Our goal is to move away from traditional fear-based parenting and towards more connection-based parenting.

But what does this look like in practice?

We provide actionable tips like breaking tasks down into small, manageable steps, as well as offering choices to tap into their innate need for autonomy and control.

Whether you're struggling to get your child up in the morning or battling the dreaded bedtime resistance, we’re here to help!

From our parenting toolkit:

Connect, connect, connect.

You’ll hear us say this over and over again. We MUST connect with our kids first as we move away from more traditional fear-based parenting to parenting from a place of connection.

A while back, we stumbled upon the book, From Chaos to Connection: How parenting with emotional intelligence raises kind, confident, resilient kids by Stephanie Pinto. This book is a powerful resource that helps us let go of out-dated parenting practices (the way most of us were raised) and advocates for embracing a new approach or mindset.

Here’s an excerpt from the book to give you a little taste.

“We cannot raise emotionally intelligent kids if we aren’t prepared to work on ourselves first. This is where we need to begin if we hope to see any change in our family.”

Wow, powerful stuff! This book will give you a clearer understanding of child development, including a deeper understanding of emotions, as well as practical parenting strategies to raise emotionally intelligent kids.
