1. The question

 

“I’ve been using some of your strategies but I still break down and yell sometimes so I feel like they’re not working. Am I doing something wrong?”

 


 

2. Our answer

 

Okay… so we need to bust a myth.

You’ve probably been told that emotional regulation = staying calm all the time.

But that’s not regulation. That’s suppression.

Real regulation means being able to move through big emotions… not ignore them or bottle them up.

So if you find yourself losing it, your nervous system isn’t broken. It’s just doing what it was wired to do:

Release energy and protect you.

You’re not failing. You’re just human.

But yeah… you’re looking for a change. So the next time you feel your rage rising, ask yourself this:

“What story am I telling myself about this moment?”

Maybe it’s something like:

  • “They never listen.”
  • “They’re being so disrespectful.”
  • “I can’t take this anymore.”

We need to remember… those thoughts will fuel your fire.

But you can intentionally swap them for narratives that’ll serve your regulation like:

  • “They’re having a hard time.”
  • “They’re not defiant, they just lack certain skills.”
  • “We’ve been here before, and we always get through it.”

This tiny shift in thinking won’t magically solve everything, but it’ll help to regulate you in real time.

It’ll create space for you to drop the emotional reactivity and show up with an intentional response.
